In line with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to expand green spaces and implement agricultural projects, Sharjah City Municipality has inaugurated two vital projects to supply irrigation water to green spaces. These efforts support the municipality's commitment to executing high-efficiency infrastructure projects, especially treated water pumping stations, which are essential for irrigating existing and planned green areas as part of the municipality’s annual agricultural plans.
The inauguration was attended by His Excellency Obaid Saeed Al Tunaiji, Director General of Sharjah City Municipality, along with other directors and officials from various government entities that contributed to the project’s execution.
H.E. Obaid Saeed Al Tunaiji highlighted the importance of these infrastructure projects, specifically the irrigation water pumping stations, which run parallel to ongoing agricultural projects throughout the year. The aim is to provide a sustainable, reliable irrigation source that ensures the success of green spaces and broader agricultural efforts. This initiative aligns with the emirate’s ongoing development and the municipality’s focus on adopting sustainable solutions to meet the irrigation needs of agricultural projects by upgrading infrastructure for the optimal use of irrigation water.
He also praised the efforts of various government departments and ministries for their significant contributions in completing the project in record time by providing the necessary support and permits. Strategic partners such as the General Command of the Amiri Guard, Sharjah Police, Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority, Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, Sharjah National Oil Corporation, and the Planning and Survey Department played a crucial role in the project’s success.
Eng. Khalifa Bin Hadda Al Suwaidi, Director of Technical Services at Sharjah City Municipality, stated that the two projects were completed with high efficiency by the municipality’s technical team of engineers and experts, adhering to the highest standards and within a record time of just 5 months. The first project involved increasing the capacity of the Al Qarayen Pumping Station from 30,000 cubic meters per day to 100,000 cubic meters per day, enhancing its ability to meet the irrigation needs of rapidly developing urban areas and critical projects.
Eng. Al Suwaidi further explained that the second project involved constructing a new pumping station in Al Badie with a capacity of 36,000 cubic meters per day (9.5 million gallons), along with the installation of a new 22.5 km pipeline extending from Al Badie to Al Musnad. This project marks a significant step forward in providing irrigation water as part of the emirate’s infrastructure plans. The station also includes a storage unit with a capacity of 2,000 cubic meters (520,000 gallons) and high-efficiency pumps.
Eng. Jaafar Ali Jaafar, Director of the Drainage Department, noted: "The upgrade of the Al Qarayen Pumping Station and the construction of the Al Badie Pumping Station are both vital projects completed in record time. They will significantly contribute to providing treated irrigation water for ongoing and future agricultural projects, promoting sustainable development and offering innovative solutions for the agricultural sector."
At the ceremony, Sharjah City Municipality honored its strategic partners and recognized several collaborating private companies for their contributions.
