The Sharjah City Municipality (SM) has announced the launch of the 12th version of its Best Home Garden Competition under the theme “My Garden, My City Sharjah 2015”.
Riad Abdullah Eilan, SM director-general, said that the competition seeks to initiate and promote an interest in gardening among residents in order to maintain the aesthetic of Sharjah’s green spaces and also aims to encourage citizens to pay more attention to agriculture and forestation and to apply creativity in the design of their home gardens.
The contest was launched yesterday and entries are being accepted until February 13. Those interested can register by calling Sharjah Municipality’s Department of Corporate Communications on 0501777175 or by visiting the municipality’s website.
Seeking to expand the green areas in the Sharjah and encourage residents to grow plants at their homes, the municipality has introduced this year a set of changes on the competition’s criteria to give the opportunity for participation to a large number of community members, Eilan said
He noted that the municipality added two new categories to the competition last year: the best school garden category in which public and private schools can participate, and the other new category is the best garden of private establishment.
He pointed out that the new added categories bolstered competition among the participating schools and private businesses, and hence boosted their interest in gardening and spreading green areas in the city.
He said that the best home garden category would include three styles: the best engineered garden, most beautiful natural design and best combination of natural and modern design.
The competition was launched in 2003 and has contributed effectively in encouraging citizens to give their wide attention to plantation and agriculture, he asserted, adding that the door is open for all interested individuals and businesses to participate in the competition until the 12th of February.
A specialized committee will evaluate each garden and select the winners. The committee comprises, among its members, representatives from the Parks and Agriculture Department, Engineering Department and Corporate Communications Department. The evaluation will be conducted through multiple criteria including the distinctive design, type of plants, methods of cultivation etc.
