SM organises campaign to remove abandoned boats

9/7/2014
The Sharjah Municipality (SM) organised a campaign to remove abandoned and unattended boats from the beaches in order to preserve the general appearance of the city as a whole and its beaches, in particular.
The municipality organised this campaign to remove the fishing boats and jet skis that were randomly kept on the beaches of the Emirate and neglected for a long period and have been converted into temporary warehouses for storing equipment for fishing and such things.
This led to the distortion of the aesthetic view of the city’s beaches and the contamination of the pristine marine environment.
Assistant director-general for customer service in the municipality of Sharjah Omar Al Sharji said that this campaign comes as part of the municipality’s efforts and continued campaigns to maintain the civilised appearance and aesthetic beauty of the city.
He pointed out that the municipal inspectors took an inventory of a large number of jet skis, fishing boats parked randomly on the beach line during the past as a result of the negligence of their owners or rental companies.
They have been issued warnings to remove and afterwards, the municipality has been monitoring the number of fishing boats abandoned and others offered for sale on the shores of the Mamzar at Al Khan, Khalid Lagoon and Al Khan Beach.
He said that the municipality has embarked on a campaign to educate the owners of the fishing boats and the users of jet skis and shop owners leasing them to abide by legal controls, which require preservation on the shores of the Emirate and save the beaches from environmental pollution or visual distraction.
The municipality is making great efforts to maintain the cultural heritage enjoyed by the Emirate and keep the beaches clean and beautiful, he said.
He urged the fishermen and boat owners and jet ski users to cooperate with the municipality and abide by the instructions and assist in maintaining the shores and remove all irregularities in order to avoid fines.
He also called upon the Fishermen’s Association to cooperate with the municipality in spreading awareness programmes and urged fishermen not to leave their fishing boats abandoned on the shores of the emirate or use as warehouses in order to preserve the environment and general appearance
